Choosing a Sofa for a Dubai Home: Five Myths About Foam, Leather and Sun
Picture a sofa delivered on a July afternoon: the lift is booked, the living room faces west, and the air conditioning has run since April. Several popular beliefs about sofas fail that test.

Does denser foam always mean a firmer sofa cushion?
Density and firmness are separate measurements. The Polyurethane Foam Association states that firmness is independent of density, so a high-density foam can feel soft and a low-density foam can feel hard. Density predicts durability in years of use; firmness is a comfort choice.
Foam makers describe support with a ratio: the force needed to compress a sample by 65 percent divided by the force at 25 percent. The Polyurethane Foam Association gives support factors of about 1.5 to 2.6 and says higher density typically improves it.
Is leather the safer choice for an air-conditioned home?
Leather is not automatically safer. Grades, tanning and finishes differ widely, and a sofa frame joins leather to timber with glue and connectors. A paper on furniture leather in the journal Koža & obuća concludes that the chosen leather should always be tested before it goes into a product.
The authors of Leather used in Furniture Upholstery (Croatian Leather and Footwear journal, 2021) say types and qualities of upholstery leather vary as much as their prices, which makes a written specification worth requesting from the maker.
Will a sofa by a Dubai window fade in one summer?
Sunlight fades furniture fabrics, and ordinary glass only reduces the ultraviolet rays behind the damage. Efficient windows do better: low-e coatings block 75 percent of the ultraviolet that standard glass lets through, according to the consumer guide of the National Fenestration Rating Council.
The same guide adds that UV-absorbing frame materials can lift protection to 99 percent. Moving the sofa a metre or two from a west window costs nothing.
Does a new sofa smell mean something is wrong?
A new sofa smell comes from volatile organic compounds, and sealed rooms hold them. Underwriters Laboratories notes that indoor VOC levels may be between two and 1,000 times higher than outdoors, and fabrics, foam, glues and finishes all contribute to them.
Certification offers a measurable check. The UL GREENGUARD programme sets emission limits for furniture and mattresses.
Can a timber frame move in an air-conditioned room?
Timber responds to the room. Wood moisture content settles at a value set by the surrounding relative humidity, and a frame built in humid conditions and then moved into a cooled apartment gives up moisture and shrinks. Joints in poorly dried timber loosen as that happens.
North Carolina State University researchers state in BioResources that wood moisture content reaches equilibrium with the temperature and relative humidity of the air around it.
What should you check on a sofa before buying?
Six checks separate a sofa built for a cooled, sunlit Dubai room from a showroom favourite: foam density on the spec sheet, a support factor, tested leather or fabric, protection from the sun, a certificate for emissions, and properly dried timber in the frame.
