Somebody has to open the cushion
Sprung.ae started in 2023, after a three seat sofa bought in Dubai for AED 7,200 developed a 30 mm dish in the left seat within eleven months. Cutting that cushion open answered the question in ninety seconds: a 25 mm sheet of firm foam glued over a 100 mm core weighing 21 kg per cubic metre, sold across a showroom floor as a high density seat.
What does sprung.ae publish, and what does each article have to contain?
Every sprung.ae article covers one furniture component and reports the numbers that describe that component honestly. Foam articles carry density in kg/m3 and hardness in kilopascals. Seating articles carry depth, height and angle in millimetres and degrees. Mattress articles carry coils per square metre and wire gauge in millimetres. Frame articles carry timber species, moisture content and joint type.
Words such as "premium", "luxury" and "high density" appear nowhere in a sprung.ae specification, because none of the three carries a measurable definition in any EN, ISO or ASTM furniture standard. A claim without a unit attached does not reach publication. Where sprung.ae cannot measure a figure directly, the article names the published standard the figure comes from, for example EN ISO 3386 for foam hardness or EN 1957 for mattress durability.
Which tools take the measurements published on sprung.ae?
Five instruments produce every figure on this site: a kitchen scale reading to 0.1 g, a 5 m steel tape, a digital angle gauge, a dial deflection gauge and a craft knife. Total cost of the five in Dubai was under AED 400 in July 2026, which is less than the price gap between two grades of seat foam.
- Foam density: a 100 mm cube cut from the cushion, weighed on a 0.1 g scale, grams multiplied by 1000 to give kg/m3.
- Seat geometry: a 5 m steel tape, every dimension recorded twice, once with the seat empty and once under a seated 80 kg adult.
- Back angle: a digital angle gauge zeroed on the seat surface, then read against the face of the back cushion.
- Spring counts: recounted by hand through an unzipped mattress panel, never copied from a label, a brochure or a product listing.
- Frame deflection: a dial gauge at the front rail with a 90 kg load applied at the centre of the seat.
What does sprung.ae refuse to do, and how are corrections handled?
No manufacturer pays for coverage on sprung.ae, and no link on sprung.ae earns a commission. Brands are named only where a specific measured example needs a name. Brand rankings are never published, because one maker can build an honest sofa and a dishonest sofa in the same production year, and a ranking hides that difference behind a single score.
Prices quoted on sprung.ae come from Dubai retail floors and Al Quoz workshops, carry the month they were checked, and go out of date. Treat every AED figure as an order of magnitude for the stated month, and treat every millimetre and every kg/m3 figure as exact. Corrections are welcome and get applied: a measurement that turns out wrong is edited in place with a dated note at the foot of the article rather than quietly deleted.
